A corporation is a “person” only with regards to certain legal obligations. It is considered a “convenient legal fiction” and is a good thing. Only persons pay taxes, or can be served with court papers and sued, or can be found guilty of crimes, or can own/buy/sell property, et cetera. If a corporation weren’t considered a person they wouldn’t be able to be sued if they screwed something up. Now, you could just rewrite every applicable law to say “persons or corporations” but that would take a long time, would be prone to errors (if it’s forgotten in one law but it was an obvious mistake how do the courts deal with it?) and it’s unnecessary because the courts have already decided that the simplest solution is just to treat corporations as persons.
Well Dave, that theory went out the window when a handful of shills decided corporations had free speech.
Money is the same thing as speech. And freedom of speech means I can produce as much speech as I want. So since money is the same thing as speech, I can manufacture as much money as I want.
To the printing presses and/or color photocopiers! I feel a fit of free speech coming on!
Uh-oh… I hope the political parties’ corporate backers don’t come across this comment. We don’t want to give them any new ideas.
Well a corporation is TECNICLY a group of people…
